Feeney Applauds Supreme Court Ruling to Restore Second Amendment Rights for DC Residents

Tom Feeney (R-Oviedo) today celebrated the Supreme Court decision to overturn the unconstitutional DC gun ban and restore Second Amendment rights to DC residents. In the 5-4 opinion in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court stated that "the District [of Columbia's] ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense." Tom Feeney released the following statement after reading the opinion:

"Today, the Supreme Court released an opinion supporting the integrity of our Constitution and the rights of Americans to defend their families and homes. The Court rightfully held that the 2nd Amendment confers an 'individual' right rather than a collective one.

"As we in Congress consider new legislation, we could take a lesson from the Supreme Court today by ensuring that the freedoms granted in the Constitution are a guiding light to the formation of our nation's legislation. I applaud the Court's thoughtful consideration of this difficult issue and appreciate their articulate decision," said Feeney.
